easyJet's expansion at Southend Airport
easyJet has announced expansion plans at Southend Airport which will see the airport adding one more aircraft to the base.
The airline began flights from London Southend this March and since then has flown almost half a million passengers from the airport.
easyJet currently bases three planes at Southend.
The additional Airbus A319 aircraft will arrive at London Southend in June 2013 enabling easyJet to add the popular European cities of Berlin, Germany and Krakow, Poland as part of its 2013 flight programme from London Southend Airport taking the number of aircraft based at the airport to four.
The airline will fly a year-round service to Berlin, a key European business centre, six times a week, every day except Saturdays from the Essex based airport and the inaugural flight will take off on 17 June 2013.
The Krakow route will operate four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with the first flight on 17 June 2013.
Flights go on sale from Thursday 1 November by clicking here.

I didnt see thousands of people protesting against the extension at the Council meetings... far from it, and a hall full of people eager to hear of a few quid on a no win no fee basis doesnt prove a thing... I suspect a number have used the Airport themselves, and good luck to them.

I have been against the airport expansion since day one. I don't belong to any group related to the airport. I'm a local resident. I'm in support of the estuary airport plan, therefore im not against the aviation industry, I'm just against one part of the industry that happens to be in the wrong location, lacks any real prestige as a fully capable airport and one that bases its sole existence on bottom feeding previously existing routes from other airports.
Southend airport, an airport that is not as good as Stansted or Heathrow or Gatwick , has less transport connections and is half the size with half the facilities.
Southend airport is a temporary solution to a growing problem, but don't worry. Charles De Gaulle Airport has loads of remaining capacity..
when the penny finally drops and the governments hand is forced into action to build another airport/runway do you really think easy jet or other airlines will maintain its Southend service's?

Ask all those who have used Southend Airport what they think of it, you might be surprised at the replies, they probably like it very much. Facts to back up this statement - I have spoken to a number of people who flew from the airport, all very impressed so I don't know where you get your so-called information from.
Fortunately, people vote with their feet and the growing number of people using the airport, the increasing number of flights and the terminal expansion make all of your comments appear, as usual.ludicrous.
PS How many years of success do you need before you admit you are wrong, please respond with a number, we are patient and have long memories so look forward to reminding you how wrong you will be proved to be.

But extra capacity is needed sooner rather than later.
I would disagree about Southends place, it's size is making it successful. Something Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted cannot do on a service level.
Use Southend and you will see what I mean.
As for the financial benefits to the area. The extra employment so far alone will be boosting the areas economy. This in turn improves confidence and encourages outside investment (will not happen overnight).
I too would be interested to know how hotels etc have benefitted.

I would guess that the answer would be, very very few.
Then you could say this about virtually any airport.
Airports are a transit hub, people just go to and from them.
The same happened with the Olympics, shops nearby had no increase in trade.
In fact London was quieter overall.

I am sure the government would keep statistics on the numbers of Brits who fly out of the country, and the number of foreigners who fly in, together with estimates of their spending and how this affects UK PLC overall. I doubt the figures would make pleasant reading, but I hope I am wrong.

when the penny finally drops and the governments hand is forced into action to build another airport/runway do you really think easy jet or other airlines will maintain its Southend service's?
Southend airports history will repeat itself..
Stansted -5%
Heathrow -2%
London City -2%
Luton 0%
Gatwick 0%
Southend +1340%
massive, unsustainable and risky growth leads to what???...
i will give you time to think about that..
oh and its quite the opposite to jobs and growth..

Quite so positive - it would appear that stobart air is getting its staff to leave these messages of support remember there are thousands of people that do not agree with airport expansion
Or perhaps people are genuinely supportive of one our areas biggest employers?
I didnt see thousands of people protesting against the extension at the Council meetings... far from it, and a hall full of people eager to hear of a few quid on a no win no fee basis doesnt prove a thing... I suspect a number have used the Airport themselves, and good luck to them.
Some will be against it, just as I am against certain groups that have to protest against anything new or chang e in this area... They'll still be here.
The Aircraft fly directly over my house depending on wind etc. It's the small ones that make the most noise, but then again I do live in a town with an Airport.... Even the shipping on the Thames is noisier with its constant dull hum... But then i live near the Thames and buy the products shipped in... I wont mention the trains. ;)
But again why would i complain about something I use?
As for Jayman, he is 'the' definition of Troll and cant stand the fact the Airport is actually successful. Why? We will probably never know... or care.
Bring on the Airport success, the potential investment in the town recently reported and anything else that brings this area up!
Leave the miserable nay sayers to constantly moan and whinge about progress if thats what floats their boat.

PS How many years of success do you need before you admit you are wrong, please respond with a number, we are patient and have long memories so look forward to reminding you how wrong you will be proved to be.
ten years is a good benchmark considering the money thrown at it (some of it our money)

So what? When I've flown from there the size of the place was a massive bonus - quick check-in, grab a coffee, hop on plane and away!
I know people who've come from London who say the transport was great; straight from Liverpool St and into the terminal.
The airport will expand but it isn't trying to be Gatwick. On a personal level, it's fantasic and I hope never to have to drive to another airport again!

They are all regular travellers and raved about Southend airport, as the journey time from landing to the station, is so much shorter than the likes of Stansted, even though the train journey times are similar.
Word will spread and business travellers, who are also occasional tourists, will see Southend as their number one choice.
You don't have to live in the area to see the benefits! Of course there will some routes which will not successful, but that is normal.

To be honest, flying from Southend airport just does not have that holiday feel. Id rather go from Heathrow or Gatwick.
I flew years ago on a skiing holiday to Switzerland and it was absolutely brilliant. No delays, your baggage was travelling alongside you to the Carrosel and local. I realise that today things would be more mechanised especially the baggage, but I would fly any day local than travel the M25 to either Heatrow, Stanstead or Gatwick and have the stress of the journey. If you are in a 12 mile radius of Southend Airport it would only take half an hour for someone to pick you up. I have waited longer than that to pick up my luggage from Stanstead!!
