New Southend primary school ruled out

A NEW primary school in Southend has been effectively ruled out as an option for dealing with the town’s baby boom.

Southend Council desperately needs to increase the number of primary school places on offer to cope with a rocketing increase in births over the last few years.

But the Echo understands bosses have all but scrapped the idea of building a new school because Government legislation means they would lose control of it as soon as it was completed.

James Courtenay, the Tory councillor responsible for education, said: “My primary concern about building a new school is it does not offer the flexibility that could be needed if the birth rate were to change again in future years.

“We do not want to build something if the need - and therefore the funding - is not there in the future.”

I cannot believe he said this. Are people going to stop having children? Are you going to discourage families from moving here? I feel that giving such an important role to the new kid on the block is not the best decision made.James needs to look at the education history of the town. It is not so long ago that they did in fact try to close a school in Leigh. They did try to amalgamate St. Christophers with Blenheim and other stupid ideas. A new school is going to have to be built eventually to house the rising numbers of children. It is cheaper to do it now.The problem is with what else he said in the paper - we could build it and then not have control over it. What the council does not control it does not want.

once they stop child benefit payments for third and beyond children there'll be a sudden decrease in the amount of children.

Maybe.
