Ripper Street star MyAnna Buring has revealed she is not a fan of the period outfits she wears on the show.

The Swedish actress has to cinch herself into corsets and bustles to play Long Susan in the period thriller, which also stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg.

“There’s no secret – corsets are ridiculous items of clothing. I completely understand why they are out of fashion,” she said.

“They’re not very pleasant to wear, but I have to really commend everyone who works on those costumes because the skill and artistry that goes in them are extraordinary. They hand-sew and hand-make those intricate creations out of pieces of material.”

The third-series finale of Ripper Street, which aired on Amazon Prime before being shown on BBC One, saw Long Susan being imprisoned alongside her husband, Captain Homer Jackson (Adam).

And MyAnna – who has also appeared in Downton Abbey and the Twilight films – knows what she wants for her alter-ego in the upcoming fourth series.

“Honestly, I hope she isn’t dead. That would be nice, that would be great,” she said.

“She has a huge beating heart, which she covers with a strong exterior and a coping mechanism. I hope that, whatever happens to her, she finds a peace with her heart and she can find a place where she can love and feel loved.

“My heart broke for her constantly during the second season, I care for Long Susan so that would be joyous for me.”

The third series of Ripper Street is out on DVD and Blu-ray now.
