An initiative designed to help improve pupils’ career prospects and enhance schools’ employability, enterprise and skills strategies has been launched this week.

The Greater Essex Careers Enterprise Network will support local schools in developing a career engagement plan.

The launch event was held at the Wat Tyler Country Park in Basildon and was attended by senior leaders from local schools and businesses in Greater Essex.

The network is a partnership between Essex, Southend and Thurrock local authorities, supported by the Careers and Enterprise Company, the Essex Employment and Skills Board, Inspire and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.

Schools will be linked with an enterprise advisor – volunteers from local businesses who are committed to helping young people explore the career opportunities available to them.

Additionally, the programme will ensure businesses are equipped with the skills base they need to ensure future economic growth and continued success.

Councillor Kevin Bentley, deputy leader and cabinet member for economic growth said: “I am very excited by the opportunities this network will provide for schools and their pupils. The current work environment is very competitive so it is our responsibility to support young people into employment whilst ensuring businesses have the skills pool they need to grow.”

Claudia Harris, CEO of the Careers Enterprise Company, said “Our aim is to build on the excellent work already taking place in the region and the commitment of the local business community to extend the careers and enterprise provision for young people.”
