One of the leading roles in higher education and training in Essex has gone to a former surgeon.

Professor Iain Martin has been appointed as vice-chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University.
The appointment of a medical specialist to define the university’s strategy over the next decade emphasises Anglia Ruskin’s growing role as a centre for medical training and research. In particular, it is a major centre for the training of midwives, and of paramedics.
Professor Martin is currently deputy vice-chancellor (academic) at the University of New South Wales in Australia, a post that he has held since 2012.
With his leadership, the University of New South Wales is transforming its approach to teaching and learning with an increased emphasis on the innovative use of digital resources.
Dr Jerome Booth, chairman of the Anglia Ruskin University board, said: “Anglia Ruskin University is a dynamic organisation which has come a long way in a relatively short period.
“The Board of Governors is thrilled that Iain has agreed to join us at such an exciting time.
“We have ambitious plans for the future and we know that Iain will do a terrific job in taking Anglia Ruskin forward through the next stages of development.”
Professor Martin was born in Newport, Gwent, and spent his childhood in Hampshire.  He studied medicine at the University of Leeds, then trained and worked as a surgeon in Leeds before moving to New Zealand in 2000.  He is married with two children.
In New Zealand, Prof Martin held a number of senior academic positions at the University of Auckland.  From 2005-2011 he was dean of medical and health sciences. Then, as deputy vice- chancellor, he led Auckland’s international activities.
Prof Martin said: “I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to join the distinguished team at Anglia Ruskin.
“It is a great opportunity to build on the already impressive achievements of this university, which has a wide reputation for its innovative approach to development.
“In its relatively short life as a university, Anglia Ruskin has seen some major achievements.
“Twelve of its research areas have been classed as world-leading by the Research Excellence Framework, and its graduate prospects are among the best in the UK.
“Three out of four Anglia Ruskin students secure professional jobs, outperforming most other graduates from other universities.  This is an impressive record, and I look forward to working with staff and students as Anglia Ruskin continues to carve out a distinctive presence.”
Prof Martin will succeed the current vice-chancellor, Professor Michael Thorne, in March 2016.
