There’s a lot of Sax Appeal for jazz fans

TOP notch sax playing provides the soundtrack as the Jazz Mix kicks off its new season with a visit from Sax Appeal.

Headed up by saxophone ace Derek Nash, who’s normally seen playing with the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, the group features four other sax players alongside him.

Since forming in 1980, the outfit have won accolades and awards, playing venues such as the Royal Albert Hall as well as appearances on TV.

The outfit features the talents of  Scott Garland, Gary Plumley, Mornington Lockett and Bob McKay as well as Derek himself,  keys man Steve Hamilton, bass player Phil Mulford and drummer Mike Bradley. With numerous tour dates all over the globe under their belt, it should be a top night.

Mick Crook, who runs the jazz club, says: “Expect driving swing blue note style, Ellington sweetness, pure danceable Brazillian Latin, Brecker Brothers-style fusion and biting Sanborn style funk, all in one concert.”

Sax Appeal play at the Jazz Mix, the Maritime Rooms, Cliffs Pavilion , Station Road, Westcliff , on August 30. Doors open at 8pm, admission is £10 on the door or £5 for students.
